MUSIC
NETWORK NEWS
A
very unofficial newsletter of the WA chapter of the Australian Society for Music
Education (Inc).
Hi
everyone
I’m
back from Queensland, having been fortunate enough to attend both the ASME
National Conference in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, as well as the
International Kodaly Symposium in Brisbane. Having both conferences back to back
was just too good an opportunity to miss.
It
was worth flying to the other side of Australia just to attend Robert Duke’s
ASME keynote address, but the workshops and papers at both conferences were of a
very high standard. Apart from the inspiration and challenges to my thinking,
probably the most useful sessions for me this time were all the technology
workshops, especially those by Katie Wardrobe of Midnight Music (I’ve featured
her newsletter because it’s so informative.)
Sorry,
this issue has blown out to 24 pages, so I may have to split it in
two.
I
am investigating ways to simplify the MNN as I believe it’s getting rather
unwieldy for some. However, there’s just SO much information I’m asked to pass
on to you all.
Personally,
I hate newsletters where I have to click on a link to other sites. However, I’d
like to hear back from you as to your preferences: Headings and links, OR
keep things as they are (information in the body of the News) OR some other
format. Please send me your feedback if you get a
chance.
(By
the way, if you have sent me information for the MNN and it has been omitted,
please forgive us. We do our best but sometimes emails get lost in the system.
Sometimes events have already happened by the time the MNN is
compiled.)

VIRTUES PROJECT
Here is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the five strategies of
the ‘Virtues Project’, proven to be so successful in schools, businesses and
families. We are reminded that ‘how we do things’ is more important than ‘what
we do’This course comes as a reminder that it is OK to just do what we do with
grace and kindness.
It’s nothing that we don’t know, it’s just
that we’re human and we need reminding and the children we teach need to be
reminded too. How does one do that? How does one keep the joy in our
everyday tasks?
This weekend event will be refreshing, relaxing and help bring you
back to your job and family with renewed enthusiasm.

“DRUMBEAT” FACILITATOR TRAINING PROGRAMME
The DRUMBEAT Program is an early intervention program for ‘at-risk’
youth and adults that uses drumming to teach a range of
social skills and lift self-esteem.
The program is strongly evidence based and has attracted widespread
interest across the country for its potential to engage young people of
different cultural backgrounds and transfer learning through an experiential
process that is non-competitive.
DRUMBEAT has proved particularly successful with indigenous youth and
others who are alienated from society.
The three day training is accredited as a group facilitation unit
under the standards of National Training Authority and covers group facilitation
skills, working with defiant youth, and the implementation of the
DRUMBEAT program itself.

How are
your preparations going? Are your students enjoying the song? Are you giving it
your own twist at your school? We'd love to hear from you about your plans and
preparations so we can share your news with the rest of Australia. Email us here.
============================================================
Just a
reminder that the classroom activity kit, song lyrics, backing track, sheet
music (for every conceivable music scenario?) is at the 'For Teachers' page. You just
need to use the generic log-in to access those. If you've forgotten the log in,
email us here. (Clue: it's the same word for both
the user name and password).
======================================================================
Do you know
any secondary school students into remixing and rearranging? There's a Music: Count Us In music technology competition called
RECOUNT and it's just for them. They can download the stem files of the song
recording from the site (you'll have to give them the log in details) and get to
work reinventing the song. All they need to do is email us their MP3 file of the
new arrangement/remix by 1st August. There are great prizes for the winners and
all entering students get a certificate. John Foreman will pick the winners.
More here.
======================================================================
The
Jellybeans Interactive White Board resources which were so popular last year are
once again available for this year's song. Again, you can make your request for
those here at the 'For Teachers' page. Thanks to Andrew,
Anthony and the team at Jozzbeat for developing these great resources and making
them available at no cost to Music: Count Us In schools.

Found this article that might help people get started with using their interactive whiteboard. http://midnightmusic.com.au/index.php/2011/02/10-excellent-ways-to-use-an-interactive-whiteboard-in-your-music-classroom/Best wishes, Jason Boron, Jason.boron@graduate.uwa.edu.au
Have done some searching (googling) for free interactive whiteboard
stuff. This SMART board related site is great and most things work
for Internet explorer browsers. If you have Firefox or some thing else
more capable you will find heaps of great links by googling "Music lessons for
IWB free" or something similar
It shows some great examples of Smart board pages that you can
download.

WORKING WITH ADOLESCENT VOICES - SURVEY
INVITATION
The idea of singing is good! Music educators almost universally
acknowledge the benefits. Yet making singing work with secondary aged children
is not always easy! At present, there is very little research that explores the
opinions, needs and practices of teachers who work with adolescent voices. You
have the opportunity to contribute to research in this area. I am currently
completing a PhD study investigating the way Australian secondary school
teachers approach singing activities. I am seeking your assistance with this
project and inviting you to complete an online survey. This survey is not just
for those who regard themselves as "singing teachers". You are invited to
contribute to this survey if you are
• A secondary school music teacher who
uses singing activities in the
classroom
• A teacher of singing (choral,
classroom or studio) who works with
secondary-aged children
• Conducting
a community choir or vocal ensemble that caters for
secondary students, but
outside a school context
• A secondary school teacher with an interest in
singing or the teaching
of singing.
You can find out more and complete
this survey by clicking on the link
below: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/S8RTVYT
Please feel free to forward this information to any
friends or colleagues
who may be interested. Thank you for your assistance!

MOUNT CLAREMONT PRIMARY SCHOOL
Is there
anyone who may be interested in taking the Mt Claremont Primary school
junior choir? This position is funded by the school’s parent body. The choir (years 1 – 3) would be taken on Monday morning at 8.00am
for an hour. It is a lovely school, quite small and very
enthusiastic. There is a music specialist who is only employed one day a week and who takes the senior choir. I
would be happy to take enquiries.

CLASSROOM MUSIC TEACHING POSITION IN VIETNAM
I am writing on behalf of my school,
the International School of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I am the Elementary Music
teacher and am a member of VOSA. We are urgently seeking a Classroom Music
teacher to teach 4 year olds – Grade 2, starting early August 2011. The position
has quite a light load (20 x 40 min periods) so it will also include some
ensembles and helping out with other school productions to make up a full time
load. We need a teacher who either has a Bachelor of Music & Dip Ed/B. Teach
or a Bachelor Primary Teaching with a major in music. The school likes to employ
teachers with at least 2 years full time experience in their home country.
It is a busy school but a good one to work at. I’ve been here for two
years and am planning to stay another few. HCMC is a great place to travel from
to explore South East Asia and is a fine city to live in. The weather is very
tropical and we expats enjoy a relaxed lifestyle. I teach Grade 3 – 6 and use an
Orff approach, peppered with Kodaly tools such as solfa and rhythm syllables. I
would love the school to find a good teacher to take the junior classes so that
we can build a really strong and exciting Junior/Elementary music programme.
If you can think of anyone who might be interested, please email me or our
Head of Junior/Elementary, Mrs. Claire McLeod at: Elemschool_Head@ishcmc.edu.vn
Kind Regards, Elizabeth
Mason
