MUSIC NETWORK NEWS -  part 1

A VERY unofficial newsletter of the Australian Society for Music Education, WA Chapter.

FEBRUARY 2009

Hi Everyone

It’s been a long time coming, but here it is at last. Some of you are probably glad you haven’t been pestered with lots of MNN’s over the last few months. However, I’ve had lots of people who have let me know they’ve missed all the news and that they’re keen for me to get it going again.

I’ll try sending this in 2 parts in the hope that DET addresses can receive it. I realise it’s too large a file for many mailboxes.

Please take special note of information about the INDUCTION DAY on March 28 and the VICTORIAN BUSHFIRES MUSIC FUNDRAISING APPEAL (in the “Can You Help?” section)

If you prefer NOT to receive the news, please let me know and I’ll take you off the bulk list.

If you would like news included in the MNN, please make sure you send me a WORD document, not PDF, with a brief description of your event/news, plus contact details so people can contact you directly.

NEWS

TEE SET WORKS SUPPORT.

Many people have contacted ASME to ask if we have support materials for the TEE Set Works in the new Courses of Study.

For many reasons, ASME WA has decided NOT to commission support materials: for example, they are readily available from other sources, there are too many different set works and there was not enough time to get new materials commissioned and prepared.

However, Tempest Music has issued the following notice regarding the Western Art Music scores:

“The final details for Set Works for TEE are now out and you will be pleased to know all of the works for Western Art Music are contained in the "Norton Scores".

The downside is that only Edition 10 has all these works.

We are ordering large quantities of Norton right now and will also be stocking up on the individual works for those of you who prefer to have the entire work or might need to supplement an older Norton Edition.  Email me now to be sure of stock for the start of the year.”

MISSING FROM SUMMER SCHOOL

Dicksons Music is  missing one of the Choral Reading Red Spiral Bound books that was used in the last session with George Torbay. The song "For the Beauty of The Earth" was sung from this book. These books are the property of Hal Leonard and they use them all around Australia and New Zealand for their reading days. If by chance you find this amongst your bag from ASME please contact Roni, 9228 0911, and we can arrange for it to be returned.    Many thanks.      .

CAN YOU HELP?

DO YOU HAVE UNUSED MUSIC RESOURCES WANTING A NEW HOME?

Jenny is a classroom teacher & administrator in a small, country school (30 students) which has not had a music specialist of music programme for many years, She is wanting to start a music programme during her DOTT release time but has virtually no budget for music. If you have unused resources, such as old Sing books, non-tuned percussion instruments, charts, worksheets, etc, which may be of use to her, could you please contact me at triglads@westnet.com.au  so I can pass on her details to you? Thanks, Anne Trigg.

ARE YOU COMPUER SAVVY, WITH SOME SPARE TIME?

I would really appreciate help with some computer issues, as I spend such a lot of time fighting this machine. If you’re on the same wavelength as computers and would be prepared to donate some time to ASME, please contact me at triglads@westnet.com.au

FROM SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY, VICTORIA UNIVERSITY (Heather Gridley)
Harmony in the Community: An Exploration of the Health Benefits of Group Singing.

A survey is being conducted by the Wellness Promotion Unit at Victoria University on behalf of/and is funded by VicHealth, and it’s all about the impacts of singing in groups for individuals and communities. Anyone completing the survey will be asked at the end of it if they are willing to take part in a follow-up survey or interview in about 6 months time. We'd particularly like to be able to follow up people who have been singing with their group now for less than 6 months, so that we can get a sense of any changes for them over time. Some people who were at the Daylesford Singers Festival or Opera in the Alps may have filled out this survey in hard copy, so no need to do it again. VICTORIAN BUSHFIRES MUSIC EDUCATION FUNDRAISING.

As communities are rebuilt after a disaster such as the one Victoria has just experienced, music can strengthen morale and give a sense of future.

That is why we have decided to join together as musicians, music teachers, music departments, friends of music, music retailers and people with an interest and belief in the power of music, to raise money to be put towards the musical well being of the communities that have been ravaged by the recent fires.

Deborah Smith is co-coordinating an appeal to help schools, kindergartens, childcare centres, community centres and any other community organisations rebuild this vital aspect of community life – music.

100% of all funds donated will be allocated towards replacing lost and damaged music resources such as:

Where possible links will be encouraged between donors and recipients to create an ongoing link between our music communities.

What you can do to help
